Casa Vicens is the first major commission that Antoni Gaudí receives, a prelude to all his subsequent architectural work. Casa Vicens is the first major commission that Antoni Gaudí receives, a prelude to all his subsequent architectural work. In 1883, Manel Vicens i Montaner, a change and bag, entrusts the young architect with the project of his summer residence in the old village of Gracia. It is his first masterpiece and one of the first buildings that inaugurate Modernism in Catalonia and Europe.
The current configuration of Casa Vicens and its farm is the result of the various changes and transformations suffered throughout its history, forming three clearly differentiated spaces: the original construction of 1883-1885, the work of Antoni Gaudí; the extension made in 1925 by Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez; and the garden that surrounds it.
In view of its new museum and cultural function, the rehabilitation project adapts the spaces of the building corresponding to the extension of 1925, in order to accommodate the different services that new cultural spaces and the public require. Thus, it has been possible to avoid having to modify the Gaudí dependencies.
To solve the accessibility of the property and conveniently order its circulation inside, a modern staircase has been incorporated, where the old one was located, linking both spaces and an elevator that connects all the floors of the house and reaches the roof. ground floor, the welcome and reception area for visitors is located; while, on the first and second floor, the spaces host the permanent exhibition rooms centered on the building and the temporary exhibitions and activities contemplated in the museological project. In the underground floor, there is the Shop / Bookshop specialized in the Capell.En At the end of the garden, the Café Hoffman gastronomic space is located.
