Further information

On March 12, 1898, the industrialist Antoni Amatller Costa (1851-1910), bought an estate of 1,415 m2, at number 101 (after 41) of Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona, consisting of a house on the ground floor and four flats and a garden of just over 800 m2. He paid 490,000 pesetas. It was a building built in 1875 under the direction of the master builder Antoni Robert, following the guidelines set out in the Cerdà plan.

In the Administrative Municipal Archive there is a drawing of Antoni Robert with the elevation of the façade, of classical symmetrical composition, with central access and two commercial premises on each side, and four balconies on each floor. According to this project, the property consisted of a ground floor and three floors, but at the time of construction a fourth would be added, which finally had to be legalized by Antoni Amatller.

Antoni Amatller commissioned the remodeling of the building he had purchased, to convert it into his residence, to Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1867-1956).

Formed at the time of the Renaixença, the architect, politician and historian of art had a particular architectural conception. In his writings he explains that Catalonia was a country that had been one of the powers of the Medieval Mediterranean and that, having passed through several centuries of decadence, it had recovered its economic power throughout the 19th century thanks to industrialization. The country needed to project a new image, through a modern modern architecture (from here would come the Modernism) that would show the recovered thrust of the Catalan society; an architecture reminiscent of the glories of the past, based on traditional arts to adapt them to new materials and new needs. To achieve this, it was essential to count on the collaboration of artisan workshops that, resurrected and strengthened by the literary and historical renaissance, formed the collective capable of turning the projects of architects into reality. They participated, thus, in the most innovative trends that were transforming the European capitals.

The intervention of Puig i Cadafalch led to a radical transformation of the building, which involved:

  • The demolition and recomposition of the facade.
  • The construction of a photo studio on the roof. Restructuring and redecoration of the ground floor (including the main staircase). Substantial changes in the distribution and integral redecoration of the main floor.
  • The incorporation of an electric lift and the installation of a revolving platform for the owner's car.
  • The rehabilitation of kitchens and bathrooms of all homes.
